Original artwork description
Westferry Circus depicts a striking urban landscape at the western edge of London’s Canary Wharf, a place where infrastructure, architecture, and history converge. The painting centres on Westferry Circus itself, a key two-level road interchange and landscaped public space that functions as a prominent gateway into the Canary Wharf financial district. The composition captures the area’s scale and ambition, framed by prestigious nine-storey office buildings such as 1 and 11 Westferry Circus, whose commercial presence looms over the scene.
A defining feature of the painting is its expansive view of the River Thames, which sweeps outward toward the horizon. This broad perspective gives the work a sense of openness and movement, balancing the density of the built environment with the fluidity of water and sky. The river acts as both a visual anchor and a historical reminder, connecting the contemporary financial district to the site’s long and layered past.
Westferry Circus occupies land that has undergone dramatic transformation. Once part of Stepney Marsh, the area was historically prone to flooding and used for grazing and mills in the seventeenth century. Over time, it became increasingly industrial and dock-focused, before falling into neglect during the mid-twentieth century. The painting subtly acknowledges this history by presenting the modern landscape as the latest stage in an ongoing process of reinvention. Beneath the polished surfaces and landscaped gardens lies a sense of former instability and change.
The work is informed by drawings made on location, lending it an observational quality grounded in direct experience. The presence of a large building site within the composition highlights the constant state of construction and renewal that defines the area. Rather than presenting Canary Wharf as a finished or static environment, Westferry Circus emphasises transition, scale, and ambition. The painting captures a moment in the life of a place that has repeatedly reshaped itself, balancing the forces of history, commerce, and the natural flow of the river.
