Wabi-sabi accepts what is unfinished, and here I left the linen open on purpose. Large areas of this canvas were never covered. The raw weave stays visible beneath the turquoise, and it holds everything that happens above it the way a screen holds a projected image without ever becoming the image.

I spray the ground in slow passes and I cannot decide where the pigment will pool or how densely it will fall — I choose the direction, never the size. I give a branch its movement, but its final length, its turn, the colour it takes in the end are its own. The large blossoms open under moving air and the paint spreads by itself; I choose the colour and nothing more, not the shape, not how far each one opens. Only the small roses and the leaves are fully mine, shaped one by one with a knife. If you stand close you can see the difference — the given and the deliberate, side by side on the same surface. Nothing here matches. The pink buds do not answer the white blooms, the scattered petals belong to no branch, and still nothing feels out of place. That is what I wanted to hold onto: a thing does not have to be complete, or symmetrical, or resolved in order to be whole. We direct what we can, and the rest arrives — sometimes as a hard branch, sometimes as a flower we could never have designed.
