Thistle. Variations (2023)Oil painting

£966.8

This is the third painting in my thistle series. The thistle emerges from a dark, shadowy background, its form sharply illuminated by a focused red light. The interplay of light and shadow emphasizes the duality of the thistle’s character: it is both beautiful and dangerous, delicate and resilient, valued and despised.

The expressive, almost violent, application of paint, thick, impasto strokes and visible brushwork convey a sense of urgency and raw emotion. The paint itself appears to writhe and twist, mirroring the thistle's spiky, untamed form.

In this painting thistle is transformed into a powerful embodiment of dramatic contradiction.
