Original artwork description
She dreams of wonderful things... jewellery, a nice car, getting married, a comfy home, children, sumptuous food, a slim body. "But how can I be slim if I eat the gorgeous cakes? Those mouths. Are they smiling at me or laughing at me?" The title is ambiguous. Are these objects creating a desire within her? Or is it "They" who are controlling her thoughts and desires? With male eyes looking on, the concepts of patriarchy and the power of the media are central to the piece. Created from images chosen from a variety of female targeted magazines, and assembled onto a recycled canvas (the background image was an original painting by my wife, Jo Beer), the final piece has a rich texture with the images loosely stuck into place. This is a box canvas with painted edges - not framed but ready to hang. Due to the recycled nature of this piece it is well travelled piece and somewhat battle damaged (see detail images).
