Original artwork description
The Winter Garden is my first large scale painting and grew from a visit to The Winter Garden in Liverpool while I was visiting my mum. During my visit, I became fascinated by a particular fern and made a series of drawings of its undulating forms. These drawings became the starting point for this painting which developed into a more abstract exploration of line, colour and movement. Despite the title, it was actually summer when I completed this piece.
The painting is dominated by layers of green, reflecting my ongoing interest with the colour and its associations with nature and wellbeing. Our eyes can see more shades of green than any other colour and I began to explore the range of shades of green that I can mix from a limited palette. Small areas of muted pink and fine red lines add contrast and bring warmth and tension to the piece.
Although inspired by a specific plant, the layered line studies result in a contemporary, botanical abstraction.
At 80 x 160 cm, this is a large, immersive painting designed to bring colour, movement and a sense of connection with nature into any space.
The painting is sold unframed and unstretched. The canvas will be carefully rolled and shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube, for safer, more economical shipping. The buyer can take this to their local framer to be stretched (and framed if desired).
