This painting is created using REM intrusion hallucinations, which I experience due to my condition, Narcolepsy. Essentially, I dream while awake because my brain is in REM sleep when it shouldn’t be. This condition was diagnosed after my brain was scanned over a two-day period at Guys Hospital. Although it has repercussions and limitations for my life, such as being prohibited from driving, serving as a witness, or participating as a jury member, it also fuels my creativity, allowing me to create continuously.
This painting represents a dream. Not a remembered dream like Dali’s, but a dream in progress. As described by renowned neurologist and author Oliver Sachs in his book “Hallucinations,” these visions appear as faces and figures — from cartoon characters to disturbing monsters, to classical beautiful forms. These faces and figures layer and change. That’s why dreams are often remembered as incredibly odd stories — not because they are, but because your memory only retains certain layers, and upon waking, it cannot make sense of the whole dream. While the dream occurs, it is a gradual and natural morphing of images. Narcolepsy, with all its hindrances, allows me to see this with open or closed eyes, and I paint these visions as if tracing an image because they appear on the canvas. However, I make technique choices instinctively to balance the colours and composition of the artwork.
These REM intrusion paintings are for collectors. Please keep this in mind for loan requests for future exhibitions. Exhibitions often increase the value of an artwork over time, so beyond the artistic desire to showcase these pieces, there is also a financial incentive for the collector.
I am a London-based artist, and my work often reflects vivid and surreal imagery inspired by my unique experience with REM intrusion — a condition where dream-like visions can occur while I’m awake. My paintings explore the boundary between waking reality and the dream world, using layered compositions to create a sense of depth and movement.
I work with high-quality materials and pay careful attention to texture and detail. My process combines intuitive brushwork with deliberate layering, aiming to produce pieces rich in emotion and inviting viewers to see new elements each time they observe.
This piece will be carefully packaged with protective materials and dispatched via a tracked courier. If you have any questions or specific requests, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
