An inelegant canter through the troposphere
‘The wee whorl’ depicts a man cavorting with nature. He appears to be engaging his environment, celebrating it’s latent beauty.
The figure himself is comprised of rigid forms, with each form directing the eye to different parts of the painting. Emphasis in particular has been placed on the outstretched arm; it playfully describes the central vertical axis of the piece precisely. Despite these deliberate compositional elements, the man, contradictorily, appears to be clumsy. His pose seems to imply an awkward gait, if not an awkward personality.
The clouds are an indication of wind direction and also imply, to comic-affect, the momentum of the man. Small clouds almost seem to be kicked back by his movement.
The grass in the foreground is also used to convey the swirling winds. However, there is an expressionist use of line and form that suggests the emotional state of man and the ambience of the piece as a whole.
