The Turn (2013) Original Oil Painting by Alexander Levich

Alexander Levich’s The Turn is part of Twenty Minutes of One Evening, a series inspired by the artist’s impressions of a short drive through the countryside. Rather than recording a specific place, the painting explores how ordinary landscapes remain in memory and gradually acquire emotional significance.

A road disappearing beneath an avenue of trees creates a strong sense of movement and depth. The small traffic sign that gives the work its title introduces a subtle feeling of anticipation, suggesting a journey that continues beyond the visible scene. The painting invites viewers to reflect on those familiar moments that unexpectedly remain with us long after they have passed.

The vibrant palette of blues, greens and warm orange tones recalls elements of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, where colour serves emotional expression rather than strict realism. Levich uses colour to recreate atmosphere and sensation, allowing the landscape to feel remembered rather than observed.

Measuring 120 × 200 cm, the work has an immersive presence that is difficult to convey in reproduction. Seen in person, it draws the viewer into the landscape and transforms an everyday roadside view into a rich visual experience.
