THE SEA OSTRICH is a fantastical relief painting featuring a baby bird, a sea ostrich, even though everyone knows that ostriches rarely live by the sea…

It was created using real peacock and ostrich feathers collected after moulting, sculpted with scissors and assembled to restore their shape and spirit. The beak was carved from tree bark, then painted and varnished.

The background of the painting was painted on cardboard and textured with relief paste, then painted in peacock blues to give it a seaside feel.

The heavy, ethnic-style wooden frame housing the bird adds to the cabinet of curiosities effect.
