The Riverbank (River Taff) (2025) Original Oil Painting by Steffan Johnson

The Riverbank came about whilst on a hiking trip in Mid Wales, near to the Black Mountains. A truly inspiring place that has drawn many artists there, and remains on of the most creative producing artistic communities in Wales.
The Taff River is the main focal point of this piece and and the distant weir draws the eye up and through the painting. I chose to paint this onto a larger canvas than I normally work on to give the river the presence it deserves and the detail of the rocks and pebbles that give it that 'standing at the riverbank embracing all of the senses'.
Whether it be a river in Wales, or Britain or Europe or further afield, nature affords us the experience that nothing else compares to. The feel of rushing water, the sound of it against the rocks and tree roots. The wildlife it attracts and the therapeutic qualities it shares with us, nothing compares to the River.
