The Old Man of Storr (2020) Original Mixed-media Painting by Galina Zimmatore

The Old Man of Storr is an original mixed media painting inspired by one of the most dramatic landmarks on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Rising above the Trotternish landscape, the Old Man of Storr has a powerful, almost mysterious presence. Its unusual rock formations have inspired stories and legends for generations.

One legend tells of a giant who lived along the Trotternish Ridge. When he was buried, his thumb was said to have remained above the ground, creating the famous jagged rock formation. Another story tells of O’Sheen and a brownie — a small creature from Scottish folklore. After O’Sheen saved the brownie’s life, they became close friends. When O’Sheen later died following the loss of his wife, the grieving brownie is said to have carved two rocks in their memory.

For me, these legends add another layer to the landscape. I wanted the painting to capture not only the dramatic shape of the Storr, but also the sense of history, mystery and imagination that surrounds it.

Created with acrylic, charcoal and collage on canvas, this original painting measures 61 × 76 cm. It is mounted on a wooden stretcher and is sold unframed. The artwork is signed by the artist and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
