Original artwork description:

One of the most famous ships in history. It is reckoned that 30 million people can trace their ancestry back to those on the Mayflower.

The Mayflower carried the group now known as the Pilgrim Fathers across the Atlantic to settle in America in 1620. It is thought that the ship was just a small merchant vessel and never really intended for more than coastal trade. The voyage took more than two months during which time the ship encountered some severe storms and eventually landing near Cape Cod in November. During the voyage there were two deaths and one birth, the baby was named Oceanus plus a man overboard (although he was recovered safely). Following the voyage the Mayflower stayed for the first winter to provide accommodation. Conditions during that first particularly harsh winter were very tough with many more lives being lost. The Mayflower returned to England in 1621 and within a few years was left abandoned on the mud shore of the river Thames.

The painting techniques used on this original painting are both representational and realistic, not strictly photo-realistic and not impressionistic either. The sea is painted much more loosely than any other component to capture the energy and force in the waves. The brush work here is almost impressionistic.

This painting is being sold in a carefully selected high quality bespoke traditional frame, ready to hang. However should you prefer to purchase unframed there would be a minor reduction in the price, please enquire.

The painting will be shipped in a robust wooden crate to ensure safe transit. Please note that for some international destinations there may be import duty/tax liable, eg. USA is 5%. It is the receiver´s responsibility to pay prior to delivery.

Materials used:

professional quality oils on linen canvas over a hardwood stretcher
