The painting explores the interplay between humanity, society and the individual and is full of profound symbolism and contrasts. At the centre of the composition is a man whose face reflects thoughts and inner struggles. His gaze is turned inwards, symbolising the search for meaning and the awareness of his own place in the world. Around him are abstract silhouettes of other people who represent society. Their faces have no individual features; they seem to dissolve into a uniform background, which shows their anonymity and emphasises the pressure that society exerts on the individual. The darkness in the background of the painting is an allegory for abstract society, which is characterised by strict rules, expectations and norms that restrict personal freedom.
