Original artwork description:

This semi-abstract encaustic painting reminds me of "The Great Wave of Kanagawa" -- that famous ukiyo-e print by the Japanese artist Hokusai, and that must have been in my mind as I moved the encaustic paint, shaping it into this wave-like movement. Encaustic is highly-pigmented pharmaceutical grade beeswax strengthened by damar resin, each layer of which has to be fused. I was fusing with a heat gun, thus used air currents and thermal energy to move the paint in this wave-like way while in a molten state. I've added pearlized powdered pigment, which created the 'foam': droplets of shaved color formed the white and light blue drops, so that it appears to be raining at sea. The details are complex and intricate, and this really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. The top portion (sky) is light green pearlized powdered fused to the underlying wax. Painted on cradled hardwood panel, this does not require a frame (1.5 inches or 3.8 cm) deep, the frame is painted a compatible jade green, so this is ready to hang. Signed and dated on the back, this work is shipped with a digitally-registered Certificate of Authenticity.

Materials used:

encaustic paint, powdered pigment, oil stick on cradled panel
