- The Italian Chapel, Orkney
Artwork description
This dramatic black and white photograph captures the quiet dignity of the Italian Chapel on Glimps Holm, a place shaped by hardship, devotion, and remarkable human spirit. Stripped of colour, the image draws attention to form, light, and shadow — the simple lines of the chapel standing resolute against the vast Orkney sky.
Built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War, the chapel is a testament to faith and creativity in the most unlikely circumstances. In monochrome, its story feels even more timeless. Light falls softly across the structure, revealing texture and detail, while the surrounding landscape recedes into stillness.
The photograph carries a sense of reverence and calm, inviting reflection on resilience, hope, and the enduring power of beauty born from adversity. It is both a historical portrait and a contemporary meditation — a quietly powerful image that speaks of endurance, humility, and grace.
Printed at 12 x 18 inches on the most exquisite aquarelle fine art paper that I have ever worked with. The combination of watercolour paper texture and bright white tones captures the essence of the image perfectly.
The image includes a 2 inches white border with the title, edition numbering and my signature. The print is handmade here in my studio and ships with a Certificate of Authenticity.
This looks amazing in a simple frame and there are others in the series.
