This black and white photograph focuses on the remarkable architecture and symmetry of the Italian Chapel on Glimps Holm in Orkney. In monochrome, the structure’s balance and craftsmanship come to the fore — the sweeping curve of the ceiling, the carefully aligned arches, and the strong central axis leading the eye toward the altar. Stripped of colour, the image emphasises form, proportion, and the quiet precision of the space.

Built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War, the chapel is an extraordinary example of ingenuity and handmade skill. Using salvaged materials and painted surfaces to create the illusion of stone, brick, and decorative detail, the makers transformed simple resources into something enduring and refined. Every element speaks of patience, care, and an intuitive understanding of design.

The photograph captures a space that feels both intimate and monumental — calm, ordered, and thoughtfully constructed. It is a study in symmetry and human craftsmanship, where creativity and structure come together to create a timeless interior shaped by resilience and quiet determination.

Printed at 12 x 18 inches on the most exquisite aquarelle fine art paper that I have ever worked with. The combination of watercolour paper texture and bright white tones captures the essence of the image perfectly.

The image includes a 2 inches white border with the title, edition numbering and my signature. The print is handmade here in my studio and ships with a Certificate of Authenticity.

This looks amazing in a simple frame and there are others in my Orkney series.
