THE GREAT NAUTILUS BIRD is a painting created using acrylic and water-soluble oil paints on cotton canvas stretched over a wooden frame.

It forms part of the Medieval Bestiary series, inspired by the art of the late Middle Ages, a period that saw the flourishing of illuminated manuscripts dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, sometimes illustrated with incredible chimeras rendered in rather crude but highly expressive lines, such as the British Luttrell Psalter (1320–1340). These particularly whimsical creatures have given rise to this series, which recreates, in the style and colours of the period, invented or reworked creatures, set against gilded or copper-coloured backgrounds adorned with friezes and designed on the principle of the cartoons used by tapestry makers of old, with floral motifs or repeated patterns here and there to fill the canvas.
