Testimony of Fertility (2026) Original Oil Painting by Lavi Li

41 x 51 x 2cm (unframed)

£5,939.38

This work depicts the entrance to one of several small plantations nestled within the Wadi Shab gorge in Oman. For those who live here, a "wadi"—which translates from Arabic as "dry riverbed"—is a treasure chest of precious gifts set amidst mountains and deserts. These riverbeds fill with rushing mountain streams after the rains, bringing life: water that nourishes plantations, livestock, and people, providing a long-awaited coolness in the shade of massive rocky walls.
Wadi Shab is a valley of peace and prosperity, where everything moves in harmony with the cycle of life. The painting focuses on a door to one of these plantations—an old, worn entrance that remembers every hand that has touched it. Its paint, reapplied over many seasons, serves as a record of the thousands of times it has been opened. It stands as proof that these lands are fertile, the heritage is enduring, and the people are diligent.
The image invites you to step through and breathe in the multifaceted scent of grass, banana leaves, and soil; to hear the slight creak of the bolt and the distant, measured steps of a donkey grazing nearby; and, ultimately, to reflect on what your own "testimony of fertility" means to you.
