This painting is based on the original photograph 'Carolina Wren Striking A Pose', by Cindy Treger, whose express consent has been requested to use it as a reference.

The Carolina wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) is a common species of wren typically found in the East of Northern America. Their colors are usually brighter than the common wrens. They usually have a bold white eyebrow, with warm brown colored feathers above, buffy-orange in their underparts. Their bill is slightly curved down, and the tail is about as long as the body and is often uplifted.

The Carolina wrens sing beautifully and powerfully. They employ one of the loudest songs per volume of birds, also often in duet, since the adults live in pairs all year, and may even mate for life. This singing can also be a warning or a threat, for they aggressively scold and chase off intruders.

As a curiosity, the name Thryothorus is of Greek origin from the combination of thryon (rush, reed) and thouros (derivative of verb throskein to leap up, spring, jump at) which means 'reed jumper'; its specific name ludovicianus is a post-classical Latin term for Ludovicus (derivative from Louis XIV) that means 'of Louisiana' that identifies the locality of the specimen collected near New Orleans.

Materials used:

Paper, oil painting.
