I painted a quiet lane in Sakamoto, Shiga Prefecture, known for its historical stone walls built by traditional stonemasons. I was struck by the expression of shadows cast by the sunlight filtering through lush greenery onto the expressive surfaces of the stone walls and the clear water of the stream. I strove to directly capture the quietness of this historic town and the pleasant atmosphere of the flowing stream.
