Summer Enchantment began with a desire to capture the serene mystical atmosphere of a woodland in early summer. Drawing on elements of Impressionism, I sought to create a calming scene that invites the viewer to pause and experience the quiet tranquillity of nature.
Soft sunlight filters through fresh new leaves, while suggestions of bluebells and woodland flowers merge amongst the foliage. Layers of colour and light create a sense of depth and movement, evoking the peaceful, dreamlike quality of a summer forest.
This original, one-of-a-kind painting is created with acrylic paints on deep-edged canvas and is finished with UV protective glaze. My process begins with spending time observing the landscape, making notes and taking photographs to use as references back in the studio. From these beginnings, I work intuitively, building the painting through successive layers of colour and texture.
I combine expressive brushwork with impasto techniques, applying paint with a palette knife to create texture and movement. I also draw on the optical colour mixing principles of the Impressionists, alongside traditional techniques such as scumbling and glazing. The painting develops intuitively, with each layer informing the next, until it reaches a natural conclusion.
The result is a contemporary interpretation of the landscape that sits somewhere between abstraction and realism, inviting the viewer to discover the scene rather than simply observe it.
The painting continues around the deep canvas edges, so no frame is required. It is ready to hang and enjoy.
