Original artwork description:

Speke’s Mill Meadow
A new discovery,
Beautiful wilderness,
Nature reserve,
Moody and dramatic,
A landscape I will dream about.

Words and experience of my recent holiday in late May where I was captivated in its beauty on the Heritage coast of Hartland, North Devon.
Original expressive watercolour on textured cold pressed watercolour paper Fabriano 300gsm 140lb.
I used my Japanese watercolour paints and created wet on wet sporadic washes leaving areas where the slits of white are and where the paper was dry. I applied with a Chinese brush mixing a deep violet purple with crimson pink and Prussian blue for the sky. The first washes for the sky I used a pale yellow mixed with orange.
To bring out the back of the contours and rugged moorland cliffs I used my filbert brush and kept going over the rocky ridge. Then I added the expressive wild flower colours and grasses by dropping the paint on wet paper and scratching out the paint for the grasses.
I was so lucky to find this place and it gave me so much inspiration.

Materials used:

Textured watercolour paper cold pressed Fabriano 300gsm 140lb, Japanese watercolours, filbert brush, Chinese brush,
