Snowdrops (2025)Linocut by Joanne Spencer
25 x 25cm / 20 x 20cm (actual image size)
£110
Artwork description
A quiet celebration of hope and renewal.
This hand-printed linocut captures snowdrops pushing gently through winter’s darkness — small, resilient, and full of promise. Set against an inky night sky, the soft white petals glow with calm, while carved marks and layered ink reveal the rhythm and movement beneath the surface.
Snowdrops are often the first sign that the seasons are shifting. In this piece, they stand as a reminder that light always returns, even after the coldest months.
Perfect for bringing a sense of quiet optimism and connection to nature into your home.
A reduction linocut is a very special kind of hand-printed artwork. Instead of using a separate block for each colour, the entire print is created from just one piece of lino. I carve and print it in layers: first the lightest colours, then gradually adding darker tones, cutting more of the block away each time.
With every stage, the design slowly reveals itself, and by the end only the final darkest details remain. Because the lino is cut down as I go, the block can never be used again. This means every edition is truly limited—once the prints are finished, no more can ever be made.
Each piece is the result of careful planning, patience, and a little bit of magic as the layers come together. Owning a reduction linocut means owning something completely unique, with its own handmade character in every print.
