Original artwork description
I have been making a series of paintings of salt-marshes on the coast of Essex and Kent for some time and particularly like the area around Tollesbury in Essex. It’s a fairly undiscovered part of the country with wonderful light & unique scenery and I'm also drawn to the juxtaposition of the industrial buildings that are often scattered across the horizon...
This painting, 'Shifting Tides' incorporates a combination of many fragments of hand painted papers which I collage onto a large canvas. The pieces of collage are little artworks in themselves and are full of detail and history.. You can see several 'close-up' details of the painting here. Several mall pieces of recycled plastic bags were melted onto the foreground of the canvas to highlight the environmental impact that plastics have on our coastline.
The finished work was then glazed with a matte varnish to enhance the colours and textures of the collage, and also to bond and protect it.
Another painting of this view from my salt-marsh series was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London 2022 and a second one was selected for the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. Also, and thanks to Artfinder, I've sold a further 3 paintings from this series.
Please note that although the ‘in situ’ images shows the canvas unframed, it has since been professionally framed in a white wood float/ tray frame and is ready to hang.
