You can get a spectacular sunset over a slum, a steelworks or a sewage farm. Sunsets happen in the sky, not on the ground. The advantage of a sunset at sea is that, if the conditions are right, you also get a degree of reflection on the water - a double whammy. What many non-Dutch people don't realise is that the most of the 450km Dutch coastline is one glorious long, sandy, west-facing beach. OK, no swaying palm trees and the sea mostly looks like the colour of three week old broccoli soup, but the sun still goes down in the west, sometimes spectacularly. Because nature doesn't always do what artists want, artists past and present alter scenes and colours to look...er..'better'. Its called artistic license or impressionism.
