Sally at the Lily Pond, 1992
Oil on paper | 20¼ × 25¾ inches
David Kofton

Created in 1992, Sally at the Lily Pond is an original oil on paper by American artist David Kofton.

A solitary female figure sits at the edge of a lily pond, surrounded by dense foliage and scattered blossoms. Her softly illuminated form emerges dramatically from the deep, almost black greens of the surrounding vegetation, while the brilliant blue water below is animated by broken reflections of white, green and dark blue.
Kofton builds the scene through loose, expressive passages of paint rather than precise detail. Figure, flowers, foliage and water are all constructed with the same energetic brushwork, allowing the subject to move between representation and abstraction. The pale pinks and warm flesh tones of the figure provide a striking counterpoint to the cool blues of the pond and the shadowed landscape surrounding her.

There is a quiet intimacy to the scene. Sally appears absorbed in her surroundings, while her partially obscured face lends the painting a sense of privacy and contemplation. Rather than presenting a conventional portrait, Kofton places the figure within the landscape, making her an integral part of its pattern, color and movement.
The shimmering treatment of the pond is particularly expressive, with fragmented strokes of blue, white and green suggesting reflected light moving across the surface of the water.
