This drawing is inspired by the moment when Saint Catherine of Siena was summoned to Rome in 1378 by Urban VI to help him restore unity to the Church against the French, who had elected the antipope Clement VII in Fondi. She went to Rome with her disciples and defended him strenuously, until she died exhausted from physical suffering while still fighting. It was April 29, 1380, and Catherine was thirty-three years old, like her Spouse, Lord Jesus Christ.
I created this drawing to explore the tension between peace and conflict, representing deep feelings with realistic and expressionistic strokes. The intense and disturbing energy it conveys is intended to make the viewer reflect on inner turmoil and human complexity. I imagine it brings a silent force into your rooms, capable of stirring deep emotions and thoughts.
