Landscape of Auvergne, France.
This small painting is part of a series of studies, quick conversations with the river.
By the edge of this river, hidden at the foot of a cliff deep within the forest, the inspiration was as much auditory as visual. For this canvas, I wanted to paint the lively song of the Sumène as it rushes and weaves between the rocks. In the background, the rock face with its deep shades of violet and earth provides a rich backdrop for the vibrant green foliage.
The brushwork becomes swift to convey the restless, white foam of the water, eager to continue its course. In the foreground, the shallow waters reveal the riverbed, adorning the submerged stones in superb shades of ochre, bronze, and gold.
It was a moment of pure vitality, a concentrate of the river's wild and joyful strength.
The white finish on the sides of the canvas allows it to be hung without a frame, should you wish.
