Ripon Rooftops
This screen print captures a carefully sought-after view from the rooftops of Market Place, looking out across Kirkgate to the striking silhouette of Ripon Cathedral.
The city of Ripon, set in the heart of Yorkshire’s West Riding, sits gently elevated between the rivers Ure and Skell. A place rich in history, the site has been home to a stone church since 672 AD. The current building—now the fourth to occupy the site—was officially designated a cathedral in 1836.
Finding the perfect composition for this piece was no small task. I climbed ladders, wandered alleyways, and even knocked on doors, hoping for access to upper windows. After much searching (and a few kind strangers letting me in), I found a view that brought together everything I love: layered rooftops, clustered chimneys, and the cathedral rising in the distance.
Printed in a soft palette of dusty pinks and pale yellows, the cathedral stands calm and proud against the sky—a familiar landmark visible for miles around. The colours in this piece are inspired by the vintage tones of Brian Cook’s travel posters, whose bold yet unexpected combinations continue to influence my work. I was aiming for something a little different—and I feel like I got it just right. I hope you think so too.
This is a 13-colour, hand-pulled screen print in A1 size. Limited edition of 27.
