- Reflections by Numbers
Original artwork description
If I told you this picture was a product of a Painting-By-Numbers kit you would probably squint at the price and choke on your Weetabix. I ain't paying THAT for THAT! So then you scroll on through the Artfinder website and come across a nice Linocut that you quite like the look of without realising that the end result of a Linocut is basically a painting-by-numbers outcome, ie, for the most part no blending of colours, just an artful collection of shapes with defined edges, representing a particular scene. But this is not to diminish the skill or process of Linocut artists in any way at all, which, along with Japanese woodblock printing, I greatly admire. Although you can now buy custom-made painting-by-number canvasses of your favourite photos this picture is not, in fact, such an item. The photograph on which it is based was taken in Croatia and although I originally thought it might be a good wheeze to affect a complete painting-by-numbers job on it I decided that the fenders and the mast need elevating above the flatter colours of the yacht and the reflections. I did this just because I can! (Artistic Licence No 87B/8925423-PL. Issued by God.) There are no rules! Painting by umbers! Well, yellows and blues mostly.
