Quiet Majesty of the Dolomites captures the distinctive character and presence of the Dolomite mountains, where dramatic forms rise calmly beneath a changing sky. I was drawn to this landscape by the unique shapes of the mountains - their strong, sculptural silhouettes and the sense of quiet power they hold. There is a particular dignity in these peaks, a stillness that feels both monumental and intimate, which I wanted to explore through paint.

The composition plays with space, depth, and atmospheric perspective, using layers of light and colour to guide the eye from the valley floor toward the distant cliffs. The dramatic cloud formations introduce movement and contrast, while the limited light breaking across the mountains and foreground creates a sense of balance between calm and tension within the scene.

This painting was created in oil using a layered approach, combining wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. Rather than relying on heavy impasto or palette knife work, the rock formations were built gradually through multiple layers of brushwork, allowing texture to emerge subtly and naturally. This approach softens the surfaces of the mountains while maintaining their structure and depth, enhancing the quiet strength of the landscape.

Through this process, I aimed to convey not only the physical beauty of the Dolomites, but also the atmosphere and emotion of standing before them, a moment of stillness, scale, and quiet awe.
