Zakhar Shevchuk’s Prelude to Purity is a 2016 study that transcends its role as preparation to become an independent statement. Painted in oil on canvas, it was created as part of the process leading to White Square Nude, yet it carries its own integrity as a finished artwork.
The seated nude is described with broad, textured strokes of blue, white, and earthy tones. Anatomy is implied rather than detailed, encouraging the viewer to sense the figure’s presence through atmosphere and gesture. Shevchuk’s handling of paint is confident and exploratory, revealing both discipline and spontaneity.
