Original artwork description
There is no longer anyone alive who faught in the horror of those fields in Flanders during the First World War and the family threads which tie myself, like so many others to that generation grow ever weaker as each year passes.
It may be that the commemorations which have been taking place recently in recognition of the 100 years since the Great War will be the last of any major significance. And yet the war has influenced, however indirectly, each and every one of us and the world in which we now live.
I wanted to create a series of paintings which depict some of the images of the environment in which so many soldiers found themselves in Flanders, both the horrors and the quiet beauty of the area.
'Platoon of Poppies' is one of four paintings completed thus far. The paint has been applied by palette knife giving the painting some texture and immediacy. The sides are left white ready to hang. It is initialed on the front and signed on the back.
Please note that the home interior image is not to scale.
