Original artwork description
Artwork Title: On Sale (Clearance of Memory)
Medium: Analog collage on paper, advertising insert, and paper art reproduction
This artwork operates as an immediate and striking conceptual and visual short circuit. Utilizing the tactile technique of analog collage, the artist dissects and merges two seemingly irreconcilable worlds: the solemnity of 17th-century Dutch portraiture and the fleeting, aggressive nature of contemporary commercial communication.
The woman’s face, defined by a proud, intimate gaze etched with the passage of time, emerges from a violent chromatic tear.
The juxtaposition and subsequent grafting of the bold "SALE" sign is not a mere act of desecration; rather, it serves as a profound reflection on the commodification of culture, memory, and identity itself within our hyper-consumerist society.
The stark contrast between the pristine white ruff, the warm chiaroscuro tones of the classical painting, and the industrial red of the commercial typography creates an instant, compelling tension.
By stripping the classical portrait of its detached museum aura, the artwork thrusts it into the urgency of modern consumer culture, transforming a historical masterpiece into a poignant manifesto of visual protest.
Slasky (b. 1972, Italy) is a self-taught artist working from Artena, Rome. His practice emerged from outside
the institutional art system — a background in manual labour that informs both the materiality of his work and
the precision of its conceptual framework. Active since 2015, he has built an independent market presence
across Europe and Asia before undertaking a decisive shift toward institutional research practice.
Selected Exhibitions (2015 — 2026)
Institutional highlight: Long Live Rembrandt, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 2026. Work selected by the museum
jury from thousands of international submissions for exhibition within the museum's permanent collection
spaces. 15 July — 15 September 2019.
