Pink Youth is an oil painting on untreated canvas. Using the rough, untreated canvas allowed the oil paint to sink into the fabric much more. This is responsible for the soft focus and soft colours in this portrait of a young man.
The young man incidentally does not exist, the portrait is 'sculpted' by alternating (the act of) painting on both sides of the canvas, letting the paint seep through and making use of the marks that occur unintentionally.
