Pink Sky Over Richmond Round Church
Francois de Melogue
2023 | Archival pigment print on professional luster fine art paper, 260gsm. | 29 x 43
The Old Round Church sits on its low stone foundation at the edge of evening, its sixteen sided clapboard walls still holding the last warmth of the day. The sky behind it has gone fully pink, a rose and violet wash from horizon to cloud, the kind of color that arrives without warning and is gone before you find your footing. The cupola catches the light differently from the body below it, its white columns bright against the darkening heavens, the copper dome settled into a dull gold green. A weather vane stands motionless at the top, pointing nowhere in particular.
The trees on either side hold their summer green a little longer, though a few leaves have already let go and lie scattered on the grass. The many windows along the facade reflect the sky back in small rectangles, each pane a version of the same pink light. The old siding shows its age in the way it holds shadow between the boards, the texture of two centuries of weather pressed into painted wood. The air at this hour in Vermont carries the first cool edge of autumn, faint enough you might still mistake it for a warm evening if you weren't paying attention.
