Original artwork description
Most of Big Sur’s beauty is obvious – a ragged coastline, and lots of ocean blue, but some attractive features are practically hidden, and Pfeiffer Beach is one such gem, with famous purple sand and wave-tunneled rocks just off shore. Apparently, the color of purple sand comes from almandine garnets dissolving in the cliffs above the beach. It is especially noticeable after the rain.
I invite you to walk with me along this path that leads to the beach. You notice the windblown cypress trees lining the pathway throw beautiful purple shadows across the sand, and after the next turn you have the first glimpse of the ocean.
Materials:
Oil on oil-primed Claessens Belgian linen on 1/8 MDF archival art panel, the back of the panel finished with melamine that prevents warping and deterioration. Painting surface is protected with a coat of Gamvar varnish.

oil paint, linen canvas, mdf panel, Gamvar varnish
