A soft light blue and pink pastel tone seascape that makes you want to dream yourself to this magical place.

Title: Pearls in the Sea

The most beautiful of beach scenes where pink clouds and light blue water is filled with a pearlescent shimmer as the water laps softly on the sand.

This image was made on a small beach called Dingieshowe which lies at the join between the parishes of St Andrews and Deerness on Orkney. The beach is one side of a double sided beach with dunes in the middle and looks out towards the Scottish mainland. Very early on a clear morning in September, I walked up over the sandy wooden steps and through the dunes to a scene that took my breath away. The water here is so pure and clean and the sand so gold and silvery, that it is hard to take your eyes from it. This is the place takes away all worries and cares and refills your soul with happiness and something beautiful.

I found these wonderful lines by Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852)

And precious the tear as that rain from the sky,
Which turns into pearls as it falls in the sea.

Themes: Beach, summer, water, sand, sea, calm, peace,
Colours: aquamarine, light blue, sand, beige, white, pink

Printed on beautifully fine art paper that is guaranteed not to fade for over a hundred years. Printed at 48 x 32 inches with a 2 inches white border with the signature, title and edition number under the image for a total size of 52 x 36 inches.

My work is all about the emotional connection we have to a place and the moment in our memory when we felt such intense pleasure looking at a landscape. I am driven to capture the essence of a place with my camera, working mainly with the colours and shapes I see when I half close my eyes. I travel to remote islands, to places steeped in history, unspoilt beaches and wild rocky coastlines where I love to work in quiet solitude.

About My Materials
People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use. Arches-Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon.

This paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use.
