Original artwork description
Peacock Mask, 2011
Peacock Mask is an original gouache painting by American artist David Kofton, created in 2011.
A mysterious figure gazes directly outward from behind an extravagant peacock-inspired mask. Kofton concentrates rich blacks, deep blues, turquoise and touches of lavender around the face, building the mask with energetic, feather-like strokes and the unmistakable “eyes” of peacock plumage.
In striking contrast, the figure beneath is rendered with extraordinary restraint. The body seems almost to emerge from the untouched surface, defined by delicate shadows and subtle lines rather than strong color. This contrast between the elaborate mask and the ethereal figure gives the work much of its visual tension—the concealed face commands attention while the body appears to dissolve into light.
The eyes visible through the mask create an intimate connection with the viewer, adding an element of mystery and theatricality to the composition. The work explores themes of concealment, identity and transformation while retaining the expressive, figurative quality characteristic of Kofton’s art.
Both dramatic and delicate, Peacock Mask is a distinctive example of David Kofton’s approach to the human figure and his ability to combine realism with imaginative and unexpected imagery.
