Based on a drawing made slightly before the lockdown in the UK following the global outbreak of COVID19, this print and its partner 'Swan Song' feels slightly prescient now. Depicting boundaries at the threshold of natural spaces, these images now remind me of a period when park gates were closed and time outside your home was rare and precious. In reality this is a recurring theme in my work. Inspired by Indian miniature paintings and Japanese prints I am interested in stylised and symbolic depictions of nature, where trees, plants, animals and insects are the protagonists of a piece, full of meaning and character, not just a background. As with all my work my aim is to conjure a mood of playful eeriness and mystery.
