New Era Dry Cleaners, 2013 is a painting on canvas made the day after I completed a drawing on site on Lower Clapton Road. I had spent several days walking up and down this stretch of road, a typical London high street in the UK, observing its rhythm and character. The shops along the street are largely run by families or small independent businesses; they are colourful, varied, and distinctive, providing local people with many of the everyday services they need. While drawing the dry cleaners, a young girl suddenly rode past and performed a spectacular wheelie on her bike directly in front of me. Back in the studio the following day, this fleeting moment became central to the painting, with the girl emerging as the main subject, set against the backdrop of the shopfront and the surrounding street.
