Original artwork description
This theatrical figural study, entitled Mudang, or shaman, was inspired by shaman performances witnessed during my time in Seoul, Korea. It is a remarkable piece of art combining experienced craftsmanship and powerful artistic expression through the challenging medium of porcelain. The glaze flows gracefully and intentionally off the figure at the base both in the front and the back of this beautiful costume suggesting a flotation or trance like essence, consistent with the shaman’s performance. The multi-fired transparent stains enhance the intrigue of its surface adding to its mystery. This elegant figure exudes strength and gracefulness and would be a compelling choice for a serious collector.
