Original artwork description
London is a city of contrasts, where Victorian buildings stand beside 1960s tower blocks. We often live and work in soulless environments — harsh materials, neglected hallways, the shadow of a flyover overhead. The only warmth comes from conversation and companionship.
While sketching in East London, I sometimes glimpse young people living on the edge — vulnerable, exposed, caught in moments of conflict or isolation. The city’s hard surfaces reflect an inner darkness: loneliness, uncertainty, and the longing to find trust and meaning amid urban noise.
In Moped, the figures animate the space, their movement dividing the architecture in two, leaving a chasm of darkness. The girl on the moped propels the scene forward, her motion energising the composition. Lines, shadows, and negative spaces create a tension between light and dark, mirroring the fragile balance between connection and solitude within the modern city.
