Mohini (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Rudra Kishore Mandal
52.07 x 72.39 x 2.54cm (unframed)
£3,081.06
Original artwork description
In Hindu mythology, ‘Mohini’ is the feminine avatar of Vishnu. The name ‘Mohini’ conjures up illusions of temptation and seduction which ultimately leads to deception. That was her power. She even caused a demon to burn himself to ashes! Going beyond our mythology where Mohibni only appears to help during a crisis where the ‘maleness’ of our saviours are at a disadvantage and failed miserably to contain the situation, this Mohini is the story of people who are ever-present but neglected. She is a living being throbbing with desires and emotions who is constantly negotiating her identity between masculinity and femininity, People who are self-aware of their duality and capable of transcending such limitations. People who are pushed away to exist at the fringes of our ‘civilized’ god fearing society because they refuse to compromise and conform and keep challenging the dominance of maleness over every aspect of our existence.
