In the same way that lawyers are often asked how they can defend someone they know is guilty, I suspect artists are most frequently asked this: ´Do you ever run out of inspiration?' But where does inspiration come from? Amazon doesn't sell it; I've checked. The original muses were ancient Greek goddesses providing inspiration to people in the arts (and sciences). But by far the best answer to the inspiration question is to quote the celebrated US artist Chuck Close (1940-2021) who kept painting, even though paralysed from the neck down for almost half of his life. Close said: 'Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work.' My neighbour posed the inspiration question only the other day after I had just got back from the supermarket and car wash. I gave him my standard Chuck Close Defence. Hanging around waiting for a muse to appear is a mugs game, not a muses game. It isn't going to happen. You just have to get to it.
