Mimi's Dress (2019)Watercolour by Suzsi Corio

'Mimi's Dress' is one of my larger paintings from a series of dress portraits, and was made using layers of textured gesso, watercolours and inks. The translucent paints were lightly sanded to allow the texture of the white gesso to show through as highlights and to create a distressed, aged feel.

This painting of a vintage lace dress belonging to an imaginary owner appears to be suspended in an empty room, a ghostly presence from a bygone era, inviting the viewer to make up their own story about the owner and her personality and history.

This original painting was selected for and exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (R.I.) 207th exhibition at the Mall Galleries in in London alongside 'Daisy's Dress' from the same series.
