Matricola 2 (2025) Original Mixed-media Painting by Alessandro Materazzi

54 x 66 x 1.6cm (unframed)

£256.97

Matricola 2 continues a personal visual diary connected to five years of my life working in Milan.

The painting was inspired by the colours and atmosphere of a pub where I worked for five years. Over time, that place became more than a workplace: it became part of my routine, my memories and the period of my life that I associate with those years.

Instead of reproducing the interior of the place, I translated its atmosphere into colour, layering and movement. A deep turquoise field becomes the foundation for white, black, yellow and muted green gestures. The calligraphic marks overlap, disappear and reappear, creating the impression of a language in constant transformation.

The large black gestures give the composition a sense of movement and tension, while the circular golden elements introduce repetition and balance. Together they create a dialogue between order and improvisation.

My calligraphic signs are deliberately unreadable. They are not words from an existing language, but gestures that allow memory and emotion to take visual form.

For me, Matricola 2 is about the traces that a place leaves on us long after we have left it.

It can be displayed independently or together with Matricola 1 as a two-panel work: two different compositions, connected by the same memory.
