Martin Covered Bridge, Vermont
Francois de Melogue
2023 | Archival pigment print on professional luster fine art paper, 260gsm. | 61 x 41
The Martin Covered Bridge sits low over the Winooski River in Marshfield, its heavy timber frame the color of dried oak and old iron. October light arrives soft and without conviction, filtered through a canopy of sugar maples burning orange and pale yellow above the water. It falls on the weathered siding in flat bands, picking out the grain of the boards, the moss grown thick in the shadow seams, a rust stain running from an old nail head. Below, the river moves with quiet persistence, dark and clear over smooth stones, carrying a few stray leaves downstream.
The air in Marshfield in October has a particular quality: cold enough to feel on the inside of the lungs, carrying the smell of wet leaves, wood rot, and river mud. Standing at the bridge entrance, you hear the structure settle, the low percussion of water on stone, the occasional drip from the eaves. The floorboards are worn pale and smooth from a century of crossing. Through the open portal at the far end, the hillside blazes in deep amber, framed by the dark geometry of the bridge timbers like a painting hung inside another.
