Lupine Field, Whitefield, Maine
Francois de Melogue
2024 | Archival pigment print on professional luster fine art paper, 260gsm. | 43 x 29

The lupines come up all at once in a Maine June, and for two short weeks a plain meadow in Whitefield turns into something closer to a tide. Spires of pink and violet lean together across the field, thick at the foreground and thinning toward the tree line, each stalk holding its color a little differently than the one beside it. The air is still cool and smells of grass and damp earth, the kind of morning that has not yet decided whether it will warm. There is no drama here, only abundance, a meadow doing the one extravagant thing it does before the season moves on.

Stand in it long enough and the field stops reading as a single sweep of color and resolves into thousands of separate plants, each one a small vertical event. The light is soft and even, the petals faintly translucent where it passes through them. Lupine does not last. It blooms hard, sets seed, and is gone by July, which is the whole reason to stop and look. This is early summer at its briefest and most generous, held still for as long as the print survives.

Available in three sizes, each signed and numbered with a certificate of authenticity:
