A simple painting for troubled times.
A moon stands in orbit, its battered surface describing an ancient and turbulent history; its presence a near permanence. A shape molded by a fluke of gravity perhaps, or alternatively, it is just an easy metaphor that evokes an optimism.
'Lunacy 1: The old cynic' is a piece that is opposed to fervent nationalism, religious certainty and pea-brained prejudice. It describes a respect for the arts, the sciences and intuitive empathy: these may well represent the greatest human achievements after all.
